Rubb helps build skills at RAF training day

Royal Air Force personnel flew into action for a training session on a new aircraft hangar door at Rubb Buildings’ Gateshead factory.

A team of eight men from 5001 Squadron visited Rubb to learn all about new door technology for the ‘invaluable’ Expeditionary Forces Aircraft Shelter System range.

The award winning Air Combat Support Unit routinely deploys around the world to provide and maintain expeditionary airfield facilities to support deployed air operations. Rubb’s rapid deployment military shelters are used by defence organisations to house a variety of fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft as well as UAVs.

The company’s Training Advisors Dave Cromarty and John Borlace were on hand to provide training on erecting and dismantling the new 21.5m (70.5’) x 7m 23’ Heli-Door.

Flight Sergeant Andy Bowles, who was leading the team, said: “The training is so straight forward and easy to follow. Rubb also provides really detailed diagrams which combine with the training. Three of my men have never worked with any of these buildings before and they have quickly picked it up. I think a team member with no experience of putting up these kind of buildings could easily learn from the more experienced team members who have taken part in this training. Working with the modules means they will quickly learn how things work after completing just two or three of the spans.”

Commenting on the new door, Flt Sgt Bowles added: “The Heli-Door is a vast improvement on the Fast Jet Door. It has now been extended so will be more versatile and able to accommodate bigger aircraft. These hangars are invaluable out in Afghanistan.”

5001 Squadron have worked with Rubb’s EFASS range on numerous occasions and will deploy to Afghanistan to dismantle and assemble more in the future. The experts at Rubb are always advancing new technology and this new Heli-Door is the latest development. They are currently working on a wider span and lower door concept for hangars to house Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.
